The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that the guilty verdict was delivered based on evidence gathered during the investigation, which revealed that the spy was apprehended in February 2021 in Kharkiv. This agent was working for Russia’s Main Intelligence Agency (GRU) and had attempted to obtain sensitive documentation related to the T-84BM 'Oplot,' a modern Ukrainian battle tank designed for engaging various ground, surface, and low-flying air targets.

According to the investigation, the agent was recruited while visiting relatives in Russia prior to the escalation of the conflict. The operatives of the GRU enlisted a jobless resident of Kharkiv Oblast to gain trust from an employee at a defense company to access classified materials.

For payment, the individual agreed to infiltrate the Ukrainian defense sector to secure secret documentation regarding advanced tank technologies. The SBU managed to identify and detain this agent early in his activities, thanks to coordinated operational efforts.

He was apprehended while attempting to transfer fake materials to the Russian operatives. During a search at the scene, officers found a smartphone that contained incriminating evidence of his collaboration with the GRU.

The court found the individual guilty under Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which addresses state treason. The sentencing comes as Ukraine continues to bolster its defensive capabilities amid ongoing hostilities.

The incident underscores the ongoing threat of espionage that Ukraine faces as it advances its military technologies. Additionally, in recent months, the SBU has reported multiple cases of espionage activities targeting Ukrainian defense information, highlighting the persistent risk posed by foreign intelligence services in the region.

Such cases are likely to persist as Ukraine remains vigilant against potential security breaches.
