Police Suspect Tobacco Company Owner in Kremenchuk Operation

What Happened

Ukrainian police notified a co-owner of a tobacco company in Kremenchuk of suspicion regarding his involvement in an illegal production scheme. This operation allegedly used a legal factory to manufacture tobacco products clandestinely. The Economic Security Bureau (ESBU) in the Chernivtsi region is leading the investigation, which has resulted in the suspicion of 11 individuals linked to this illicit enterprise.

Key Details

According to the ESBU, the underground workshop utilized two powerful production lines capable of generating large volumes of goods. Detectives identified that the factory was producing various cigarette brands that were then distributed through an extensive network across Ukraine.

The total estimated value of the seized property is around UAH 50 million. Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko highlighted that the co-founder turned his legal enterprise into an illegal operation.

In a preceding investigation in November 2023, authorities uncovered significant quantities of tobacco raw materials, cigarettes, alcohol, and counterfeit excise stamps, all of which pointed to a widespread illegal manufacturing scheme. The amount involved during that operation also reached around UAH 50 million.

The operation began to come to light during a crackdown on illegal activities involving tobacco and alcohol production in the Poltava region. The prosecutor's comments indicated that examinations conducted during the investigation confirmed the products were unsafe for consumption.

Tobacco products contained harmful foreign impurities, while the alcohol did not meet national quality standards. Prosecutor Kravchenko also emphasized that the illegal products were disguised as reputable brands.

They were dispersed through trusted channels involving cash transactions and mail deliveries. Authorities are now focused on ensuring that appropriate legal measures are taken against those involved in this extensive network of illegal production.

The police have dismantled other illegal supply channels in regions such as Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia, showing a wider crackdown on tobacco smuggling operations in Ukraine.
