According to Vasyl Bohdan, the head of Ukraine's Juvenile Police, more than 2,000 criminal offenses have been committed against children since the start of the academic year. In contrast, children themselves have reportedly committed over 1,000 offenses during the same time frame.
The incidents involving children primarily include hooliganism, bodily harm, and property offenses. Bohdan highlighted that the most common offenses against children involve violence, cruel treatment, and property crimes.
He underscored the importance of parental involvement in children's daily lives, urging families to maintain constant communication. "It’s critical to know where your child is, who they are with, and how they spend their time," he stated, emphasizing the necessity of daily interactions rather than total control.
The juvenile police chief recommended that parents and relatives pay close attention to changes in their children's behavior, such as sudden withdrawal or the emergence of unfamiliar acquaintances. He underscored the responsibility of caregivers to stay vigilant about their child's online interactions, advising them to discuss the dangers of sharing personal information online and the importance of reporting any suspicious communications.
Bohdan also addressed the significance of trust within the family unit, advising parents to foster an environment where children feel safe discussing problems without fear of reprimand. This open communication is crucial for timely intervention should issues arise, potentially preventing further harm.
He noted that since the onset of the full-scale war, there has been an increased awareness among Ukrainians regarding the safety of children, highlighting the societal shift toward more proactive approaches in safeguarding minors. As the academic year progresses, the continued vigilance and support of parents can play a significant role in curbing these offenses and ensuring the well-being of children across Ukraine.
