Massive Russian Attack Disrupts Energy Infrastructure Across Ukraine

In the early hours, Russian forces launched a coordinated missile-and-drone strike targeting energy infrastructure in Kyiv and other regions. Reports from Ukrenergo indicate that areas including Kyiv, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk are experiencing power outages due to the damage.

As energy companies mobilize emergency repair crews, the changing security situation has prompted immediate adjustments to electricity consumption restrictions for consumers. Ukrenergo outlined that starting at 08:00, new capacity limitation schedules have been instituted across several regions, necessitating hourly outages for all consumer categories.

The power system operator has urged residents to adjust their electricity usage patterns, advising that high-consumption appliances should be used during daylight hours, specifically from 11:00 to 16:00, when solar energy generation peaks. As a precaution, Ukrenergo requested that consumers in affected areas limit their usage during peak evening hours, between 17:00 and 22:00.

This request comes in response to the extensive power demands in the aftermath of the strike and aims to stabilize the electricity supply. Earlier reports noted that the escalation began around 18:00 on March 13, when Russian forces employed a mix of land-based and sea-based missiles, alongside approximately 430 drones, in an extensive attack on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.

In this assault, Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted or neutralized significant portions of the threat, including 58 missiles and over 400 drones. Despite efforts to mitigate the impact, there have been civilian casualties, with the attack resulting in four fatalities and damage to various civilian infrastructures.

Emergency power outages were also reportedly implemented in Kyiv and the Bucha district. The urgency of the situation underscores the continued vulnerability of Ukraine's energy systems amidst ongoing hostilities, emphasizing the importance of both domestic and international efforts to fortify these critical infrastructures against future assaults.
