The Hungarian government announced on March 19, 2026, that it has placed a ban on three Ukrainian individuals due to purported threats directed at Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Government spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs shared this information on social media, referencing comments from Gergely Gulyas, head of the Prime Minister's Office.

According to Gulyas, the decision was made rapidly to ensure national security and uphold European norms that they believe were compromised by the alleged threats. Gulyas emphasized that Hungary's stance on financial support to Ukraine remains connected to the operational status of the Druzhba oil pipeline.

The Hungarian government has indicated that it will not support further European Union funding for Ukraine until oil supplies from the pipeline are restored. "If there is no oil, there is no money," Gulyas stated, reiterating the government's position clearly.

This incident follows a previous case where Hungary barred the entry of three Ukrainian military officers. That decision stemmed from the death of a mobilized individual with dual Ukrainian and Hungarian citizenship, highlighting ongoing tensions between the two countries.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto had previously linked the entry bans to attacks on the Druzhba pipeline, illustrating the intricate relationship between military incidents and diplomatic relations. Hungary's latest actions have raised concerns among observers and analysts regarding the deteriorating diplomatic ties between Ukraine and Hungary.

The Hungarian government's strict measures may further complicate discussions on European support mechanisms for Ukraine, especially given the current geopolitical landscape. As Western nations continue to support Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict, Hungary's approach suggests a cautious stance tied closely to national energy interests.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing implications for both countries as they navigate their respective political landscapes. Hungary's restrictions on Ukrainian citizens may impact work, travel, and bilateral relations in the near future, calling for careful monitoring from both governments and stakeholders involved in the region.
