During a press conference alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Merz emphasized the agreement among G7 leaders regarding the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia. He expressed concern that the U.S.

government's decision undermines this unified stance. The conversation included discussions about oil and gas supplies from Russia, highlighting a clear consensus among six G7 nations against easing sanctions.
Yet, the U.S. government's recent move to allow some purchases of Russian oil is viewed as contradictory to this agreement.
Merz questioned the motivations behind the U.S. government's temporary decision.
The decision allows countries to purchase Russian crude oil and oil products that are already aboard ships, effective from March 12 to April 11. This measure came as a surprise to many international leaders, including Merz, who indicated that while there are current problems with oil prices, the focus should remain on exerting pressure on Moscow rather than easing restrictions.
Merz remarked that the lack of willingness from Russia to engage in peace talks regarding the conflict with Ukraine necessitates a stronger stance on sanctions. As the war continues, he stressed that diminishing sanctions could provide Russia with resources it could use against Ukraine.
He assured that Germany will persist in its support for Ukraine, indicating that ongoing global conflicts, such as those in the Middle East, should not distract from the threat posed by Russian aggression. Norwegian Prime Minister Støre echoed Merz's sentiments, emphasizing that both countries share a commitment to maintaining sanctions on Russia, particularly in the energy sector.
He reinforced that without collective actions against Russia, the potential for further aggression remains high. In response to the U.S.
measures, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pointed out that easing restrictions could lead to an additional $10 billion for Russia, further complicating the efforts to stabilize the region. The ongoing discussions among international leaders signify a growing concern regarding any perceived weakening of unified sanctions against Russia.
Leaders like Merz underscore the critical need to maintain a cohesive front in the face of ongoing hostilities in Ukraine.
