The endorsement comes as a significant show of solidarity with Ukraine, with candidates from diverse political backgrounds joining forces for this cause. Edward Mayor, the president of Stand with Ukraine, confirmed that a day before the second round of local elections, candidates representing 100 cities and all political factions supported the Charter.
Major urban centers like Paris, Lyon, and Nice are among those with signatories, illustrating a wide-reaching consensus on the issue. In Paris, two of the three finalists—socialist Emmanuel Grégoire and Republican candidate Rachida Dati—have added their names to the document.
In Nice, candidate Éric Ciotti, previously a member of the Republicans but now aligned with Marine Le Pen's party, also supported the initiative. Strasbourg saw commitments from four candidates with varying political views, further displaying a rare bipartisan agreement on Ukraine's support.
The Charter aims to promote democratic values and sovereignty for Ukraine while fostering partnerships between French and Ukrainian cities. It also seeks to involve local associations and businesses in aiding Ukraine, integrating Ukrainian themes into local culture, and conducting awareness campaigns against disinformation and Russian interference.
This movement is notable for its ability to transcend electoral rivalries, suggesting that support for Ukraine is uniting candidates across different municipalities and political ideologies. The initiative is being viewed as a long-term strategy to maintain a structured support network for Ukraine beyond typical political cycles.
As France holds heightened attention on local elections, which many see as a precursor to sentiments for the 2027 presidential elections, the signing reflects a divergence in views where regional solidarity with Ukraine may play a pivotal role in electoral dynamics. Voter sentiment will be keenly monitored as the second round of local elections takes place today across about 1,500 cities and municipalities in France.
