The sentence was handed down after Nataliia Chornobai was found guilty of promoting anti-Ukrainian sentiments and supporting the aggressor during the ongoing conflict. The case came to public attention after a video surfaced in which Chornobai derisively referred to a cemetery for fallen soldiers as 'the most fun' place in the city.

Her comments, which included expressions of delight at the increasing number of graves, were met with outrage from the community. She was reported to have sent the video to friends living in Russia, further implicating herself in activities against Ukraine.
Chornobai was exposed by the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) following a thorough investigation initiated after the video’s release. According to sources, the investigation revealed her continuous display of anti-Ukrainian views on social media platforms, including Facebook and Vkontakte, where she often reposted provocative content.
These online activities raised concerns among her colleagues and the public. Her employment history included a role as a judge's assistant before serving as a court clerk since 2019.
Reportedly, her superiors at the court were unaware of her extremist views until the scandal emerged, leading to questions about oversight and personnel vetting within the judicial system. During the trial, Chornobai admitted to her actions but expressed disbelief over the severity of her punishment, arguing that her statements did not warrant a decade-long sentence.
The court, however, deemed her actions as particularly harmful against the backdrop of a war that has claimed thousands of lives. The sentence reflects ongoing efforts by Ukrainian authorities to address treason and contempt for military sacrifices as the nation endures a protracted conflict.
Public sentiment is highly sensitive regarding actions perceived as supporting the enemy, particularly in the context of a war that has profoundly affected countless lives throughout Ukraine. Chornobai’s case serves as a cautionary tale and underscores the legal ramifications for individuals who promote anti-Ukrainian sentiment in any form, especially during times of national crisis.
As her appeal process begins, the outcome may influence future cases related to similar infractions.
