On March 15, 2026, a memorial ceremony took place in Zakarpattia to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the Carpathian Sich, who lost their lives in the battle of Krasne Pole in 1939. The event marked the 87th anniversary of Carpathian Ukraine's declaration of independence from Czechoslovakia.

Local officials, community members, and representatives from various organizations participated, gathering at a memorial park near Khust to pay their respects. Among those present was Myroslav Biletsky, head of the Zakarpattia Regional State Administration, who emphasized the sacrifices made by the young fighters.

In a speech posted on Facebook, he reflected on the legacy of those who fought for their nation's freedom, asserting that the independence sought is not granted, but fought for. Biletsky underscored the importance of Krasne Pole as a symbol of resistance, stating, 'We proved that Zakarpattia is Ukraine and we are ready to fight for victory until the end.' The battle at Krasne Pole occurred on March 15, 1939, between the forces of Carpathian Ukraine and the Hungarian military, which significantly outnumbered the Ukrainian troops.

The poorly equipped and under-trained Sich soldiers displayed remarkable courage in facing such overwhelming odds. Their actions have since been compared to the heroics of the warriors of Kruty, another key historical moment in Ukraine's struggle for independence.

Biletsky also noted the continuing relevance of the battle's lessons. He remarked, 'The events at Krasne Pole provide us with an invaluable lesson: even when the odds seem insurmountable, we must fight.

For truth is on our side, and with God and victory with us, we will prevail.' The commemoration serves as a reminder of Ukraine's ongoing challenges and the historical context of its quest for independence. Kirill Budanov, head of the President's Office, highlighted that the declaration of Carpathian Ukraine was a pivotal attempt to restore statehood following the defeat of the Ukrainian People's Republic.

Such events honor not only the memory of the fallen but also reinforce the cultural and historical identity of Ukraine amidst contemporary struggles. The observance of this commemoration reflects the enduring spirit of those who fought and their significance in Ukraine's fight for sovereignty.
