Ukrainian authorities have submitted charges against three Russian military personnel in relation to the abduction of the crew from the salvage vessel 'Sapphire' in February 2022.

Details of the Incident

Investigations by the National Police of Ukraine suggest that a Russian vice admiral ordered the crew's capture. At the time, the 'Sapphire' was conducting a humanitarian mission aimed at evacuating injured servicemen from Snake Island amidst heavy fire.

Despite being unarmed and carrying civilians, including medical personnel, the crew was detained, facing poor conditions, including inadequate food and water. The vice admiral coordinated the operation involving two Russian military ships.

Treatment of the Crew

All 21 crew members faced interrogations, accused of links to the Ukrainian Security Service or Armed Forces. Reports indicate they suffered brutal treatment and threats during their captivity.

The vice admiral traveled to Snake Island to supervise the interrogation of the ship's captain. Subsequently, the crew was transferred to occupied Crimea, disregarding their civilian status.

Release and Legal Proceedings

The crew was released in March 2022 as part of a prisoner exchange. Ukrainian authorities have since gathered enough evidence to charge the three soldiers under Article 438 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which addresses cruel treatment of civilians and breaches of humanitarian law. They are accused of torture and mistreatment of the 'Sapphire' crew.

Since the beginning of the conflict, over 240,000 war crimes have been recorded. Prosecutors have indicated that military personnel convicted of these offenses may face sentences of up to 12 years in prison. This case is part of Ukraine's broader effort to hold war criminals accountable, along with earlier charges against other Russian fleet commanders for similar offenses.
