The Prime Ministers of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Canada met in Oslo to discuss collective defense strategies and pronounced their commitment to enhancing collaboration in areas essential for regional security. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that uncoordinated defense spending both undermines taxpayer value and the safety of citizens.

He noted that while Canada will continue its procurement ties with the United States, there is a growing drive toward establishing partnerships with other countries, including those in the Middle East and Europe. The leaders highlighted the pressing importance of supporting Ukraine, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict with Russia, which poses a challenge to both regional and European stability.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen affirmed that the traditional order of global affairs has irrevocably changed, and it is crucial to forge a new framework based on shared values. The meeting culminated in a solid pledge from the Nordic countries and Canada to maintain and potentially increase their economic, civilian, military, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

The statement released by the Arctic-region nations reinforced their resolve to coordinate their support effectively and to impose stricter sanctions on Russia, aiming to limit its capacity to fund its military actions. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who hosted the gathering, indicated that enhanced cooperation among these countries could lead to improved security and new economic opportunities in the region.

Previously, Canada has taken a firm stance against easing sanctions on Russian oil, which it maintains even in the face of rising energy challenges stemming from global conflicts, including the ongoing situation in Iran. The leaders are aligning their foreign policy approaches, with a shared commitment to standing firm against aggression and supporting nations that defend democratic values.

This agreement not only reflects strengthened ties among the participating nations but also signals a decisive moment in the global response to the crisis in Ukraine, reinforcing the notion that support for Ukraine remains a priority for these countries.
