On March 15, 2026, leaders from Canada, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland convened in Oslo to discuss collective security and deepened cooperation in military-industrial production. The meeting underscored the necessity for these nations to align their defense efforts in support of Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict with Russia.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the importance of coordinated spending on defense to maximize taxpayer benefits and ensure effective protection for citizens. Carney's remarks highlighted the shift towards seeking meaningful partnerships beyond mere transactional relationships, indicating a desire to reduce Canada’s dependency on the United States while expanding connections with countries in Asia and Europe.

He pointed out that future procurement would aim to involve a broader coalition of nations rather than focusing solely on American suppliers. During the discussions, the Nordic leaders affirmed their commitment to continuous support for Ukraine, pledging to provide economic, military, and humanitarian assistance.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen remarked on the need to build a new global order based on shared democratic values, reflecting the shifting geopolitical landscape. The Arctic region leaders collectively recognized that aiding Ukraine is vital for the security of Europe and the Arctic's stability.

Their statement reiterated the importance of concerted international efforts to impose sanctions on Russia, thereby constraining its capacity to continue funding the conflict. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, the host of the meeting, articulated that enhanced collaboration not only bolsters security but also creates new opportunities for economic growth in the region.

He urged all coalition partners to increase their support for Ukraine, highlighting the necessity of unified action in these critical times.
