During a recent address, Bart De Wever emphasized the necessity for the European Union to obtain a mandate for peace negotiations with Russia. He pointed out that despite support from allies, Russia has not abandoned its military objectives in Ukraine.

De Wever’s comments come amid ongoing debates within the EU concerning the best approach to engage with Moscow and resolve the conflict. De Wever articulated a pragmatic view of the current geopolitical landscape, suggesting that European powers lack the leverage to coerce Russia through military means.
"Since we are not capable of threatening Vladimir Putin by sending weapons to Ukraine, and we cannot choke him economically without the support of the U.S., there is only one method left: making a deal," he stated. This perspective reflects a broader concern within Europe regarding the limitations of military solutions without robust backing from the United States.
The Belgian Prime Minister expressed skepticism about the U.S. commitment to Ukraine's defense, suggesting that Washington sometimes appears to soften its stance towards Russia.
He warned that without a strong EU position in negotiations, outcomes may be unfavorable for Ukraine. In a related context, Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, recently asserted the need for the EU to develop a unified stance on demands to be presented to Russia before initiating any talks.
This call for consensus illustrates the complexities the EU faces in formulating a coherent strategy towards a peace process. Additionally, the ongoing trilateral discussions involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia, intended to take place this week, were delayed at the request of U.S.
officials. President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted that these postponements reflect the intricate dynamics at play, influenced by recent developments in the region, including Iran’s role.
The situation remains fluid as Ukraine continues to navigate its relationships with both European partners and the United States in pursuit of lasting peace and security.
