Belgian PM Calls for EU to Negotiate Peace with Russia

In an interview with the Belgian newspaper L'Echo, Bart de Wever emphasized the necessity of dialogue with Russia, stating that continued military support for Ukraine has not deterred Russian President Vladimir Putin from pursuing war. He argued that without a mandate for negotiations in Moscow, Europe risks being sidelined in discussions that could greatly affect the future of Ukraine.

De Wever pointed out that while the EU has attempted to exert pressure through arms deliveries, the lack of a unified approach and full backing from the United States has limited its effectiveness. He criticized the notion that the EU could successfully confront Russia on its own, suggesting that robust American support is essential for any significant progress.

De Wever’s comments mirror those of French President Emmanuel Macron, who previously suggested that European leaders should restore direct talks with Putin. Many European leaders have expressed frustration over being excluded from peace discussions led by the U.S., particularly under past administrations.

Recent statements by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have also supported the idea of reopening dialogue with Russia, contingent on ensuring that such contacts do not disrupt existing negotiations aimed at ending the conflict. The Belgian Prime Minister's view reflects a significant shift in the European perspective on handling the Russian aggression.

In his remarks, he alluded to concerns that the U.S. may not fully understand or support Ukraine's position, hinting at a precarious balance in international diplomacy.

De Wever mentioned that if the EU does not engage in talks, any agreement reached under American pressure might unfavorably impact European interests. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the need for a cohesive European strategy that incorporates diplomacy alongside military support has become increasingly urgent.
