Austrian Expert Advocates for Ukraine's Ballistic Missile Production

Necessity for Support

Gustav Gressel, a lecturer at the Austrian National Defense Academy, stated that Europe should assist Ukraine in developing its ballistic missile production capabilities. In an interview with Ukrinform, he highlighted that such advancements could enable Ukraine to strike deep into Russia effectively.

Deterrence and Reliability

Currently, Europe has limited ballistic missile production capacity, with Turkey as an exception for short-range missiles. The UK has only recently begun a related project.

Gressel emphasized that Europe must partner with Ukraine to close the capability gap, not only for immediate military needs but for future deterrent capabilities against threats like Russia's Iskander missiles. He discussed the existing Flamingo cruise missiles in Ukraine, pointing out their strengths and weaknesses.

While their long range and powerful warheads are beneficial, their size makes them more susceptible to interception. Gressel raised concerns about their accuracy, citing limited evidence of successful strikes.

He also pointed out the political implications of targeting decisions, suggesting Ukraine avoids civilian areas to counter Russian narratives. Improving the accuracy of Flamingo missiles remains crucial, particularly since military facilities are often located in urban environments.
