25 Ukrainian Firms Join Private Air Defense Project

What Happened

The Ukrainian government launched an experimental project in November 2025 to create private air defense units. As of May 4, 2026, 25 enterprises have completed the formation of their own air defense groups. According to Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, these firms span various regions of the country and are contributing to the enhancement of Ukraine's air defense capabilities.

These companies have received official status from the Ministry of Defense and are now in the process of organizing their respective air defense teams. Some of these teams are already engaged in combat operations and have successfully shot down over ten enemy drones, including models like Shahed and Zala.

Svyrydenko emphasized that this initiative is critical for strengthening the protection of vital infrastructure while allowing for the scaling of air defense capabilities without adding strain on active military units. All decisions regarding this initiative are made under the supervision of military leadership and align with the unified air defense system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (ZSU).

Furthermore, there is a clear application process for additional companies wishing to join the project; it involves submitting an application to the Ministry of Defense, undergoing a compliance check, and if approved, developing air defense groups that coordinate with the ZSU Air Forces. For companies deemed critical, a simplified application process is available, enabling them to acquire the necessary powers based on a declarative principle.
